data

In the first half of 2025, renewable energy generated 5,072 TWh of electricity, while coal generated 4,896 TWh. Renewables overtook coal for the first time ever.

Renewables reached 34.3% of global electricity, up from 32.7% the year before. Coal dropped to 33.1%.

Global electricity demand grew by 2.6% (+369 TWh), but solar alone grew by 31% (+306 TWh) and covered most of that increase.

Even with higher demand, power sector CO₂ emissions fell slightly because clean power grew faster than fossil fuels.
